Warm, shallow seas covered much of Montana throughout most of the Jurassic. Small, sluggish rivers carried terrestrial sediments to the east and northeast, forming a low coastal plain. Montana's oldest dinosaurs roamed among ferns, ginkgos, cycads, and conifers.
