Paleontology and geology

Very little remains of any Silurian rocks in Montana due to high rates of erosion in the Devonian. There are subsurface rock layers in the state that record the presence of shallow, warm seas covering the eastern third of the state. Fossils of marine life from drill cores include corals, gastropods, brachiopods, stromatoporoids, and algal mats.
