Paleontology and geology

From about 1.5 billion years ago to 800 million years ago, a thick sequence of sandy and muddy deposits accumulated in the western part of Montana. These sediments represent the west coast of the early North American continent and contain the oldest evidence of life in Montana. Fossils include stromatolites, as well as traces left by marine animals crawling along the sea floor.
