Paleontology and geologyNew Brunswick was above sea level during the Cretaceous, and most of the sediments that were deposited on land have been eroded away. However, basins that formed in the Carboniferous protected some of these sediments from erosion, and they can now be found below the surface, covered by Quaternary glacial deposits. One small outcrop of sand in southern New Brunswick is the only known exposure of Cretaceous sediments. It contains fossil pollen, spores, and wood fragments. This outcrop is too small to appear on this map, but may show up on other, more detailed maps. |
