Paleontology and geology

Silurian rocks occur in a broad north-south band through the central part of the state and in several smaller areas in northeastern Massachusetts. Although these rocks have since been metamorphosed and deformed by several episodes of mountain building, a few fossils remain. These include brachiopods and other marine organisms, indicating that this area was covered by a sea during at least part of the Silurian.
