Paleontology and geology

During the Devonian, a phase of mountain building (the Acadian Orogeny) occurred in Massachusetts and the surrounding region. Rocks formed during this time interval are exposed in a number of areas throughout central and eastern Massachusetts. They are primarily metamorphic and igneous rocks and contain no fossils.
