Paleontology and geology

Cretaceous rocks occur only on the Elizabeth Islands southwest of the Cape Cod peninsula and on the nearby island of Martha’s Vineyard. These fine sand and clay layers were deposited in rivers and streams on an ancient coastal plain and shallow sea floor. Fossils of flowers and pine needles have been recovered from these sediments.
