Paleontology and geology

Although this map does not show any Triassic rocks at the surface, other geologic maps indicate small exposures of bright red and orange sandstones and shales in the far western end of the Panhandle. Climatic conditions in Oklahoma during this time interval appear to have been about the same as they were during the Permian: fairly hot and dry. All rocks of Triassic age in Oklahoma are terrestrial in origin. They were most likely deposited as sediments in rivers and flood plains.
