Paleontology and geology

Some isolated blocks of carbonate rocks, metamorphosed marine sediments, and metamorphosed volcanic rocks are scattered through the northern part of the state (shown as undifferentiated on this map). Some of these rocks may have formed far from their current positions. The igneous rocks appear to be remnants of volcanoes and intrusions that formed as blocks of crust were added to the western edge of the North American continent during this time interval. No Triassic fossils have been found in Washington.
