Paleontology and geology

Marine conditions were widespread and diverse during the Carboniferous in the region that would become modern Alaska. Continental shelves and bordering slopes hosted abundant concentrations of living organisms. The best and most extensive record of Carboniferous times is in the northern third of the state and includes fossils of rugose corals, brachiopods, snails, and a variety of large foraminifera.
