Paleontology and geology

During the Devonian, part of what is now Oregon was a tropical oceanic island. Oregon's oldest rocks, exposed in a small area of east-central Oregon, consist of massive limestones formed during this time. The limestones contain fossils of coral and other marine invertebrates and represent an ancient reef and adjacent lagoon.
