Paleontology and geology

During the Quaternary, West Virginia was south and east of the ice sheets of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Boreal forests covered much of the state at lower elevations, whereas a tundra environment typified the higher elevations. Animals that lived in West Virginia during this time included mastodons, mammoths, and ground sloths, but their fossils are known only from cave deposits.
