Paleontology and geology

Sedimentary rocks of Jurassic age are found in the Connecticut River Valley, which runs through the central part of the state. These rocks originally formed as sediments deposited in streams and lakes that filled rift valleys. The rifting occurred as the supercontinent of Pangea pulled apart. Fossils found within these sediments include those of insects, freshwater molluscs, fish, and the footprints of dinosaurs. One of the places to see dinosaur footprints is at a small park along the Connecticut River near Holyoke.
