Paleontology and geology

During the Precambrian, the area that would become Rhode Island was part of a volcanic arc called Avalonia and was located near the South Pole. Granites intruded these metamorphosed rocks several times during mountain-building episodes that began in the late Precambrian and continued until the Permian.
