Paleontology and geology

A narrow band of Permian rocks can be found along the southern coast of Rhode Island, from Narraganset Bay in the eastern part of the state to the Connecticut border. These rocks are granites formed during the last episode of mountain building on the East Coast (the Alleghenian Orogeny). Because these rocks are igneous in origin, there are no fossils present in them.
