Paleontology and geology

In the Ordovician, a series of mountain-building activities, known as the Taconic Orogeny, began. This resulted in intense metamorphism and deformation of the rocks and the development of a basin in westernmost North Carolina, in which sands and muds were deposited. No recognizable fossils have been found in North Carolina from this time period.
