Paleontology and geology

The Permian was a time of intense deformation, metamorphism, and mountain building (the Allegheny Orogeny), resulting in the final uplift of the Appalachian Mountains. There are no clearly identified sedimentary rocks or fossils from the Permian in North Carolina. However, there are undifferentiated rocks that may include rocks of this period.
