Paleontology and geology

A northeastern extension of the Western Interior Seaway frequently covered much of Minnesota during this time. A muddy coastline gave way to a shallow sea floor that was home to oysters, clams, and other typical marine organisms. Ammonites and sawfish swam in the waters above. The climate was warmer than today and on land, dense, tropical vegetation flourished across the state, providing habitats for animals such as crocodiles.
