Paleontology and geology

The oldest known rocks in Indiana are from the Precambrian, and are buried deep underground. Therefore, Precambrian rocks can only be studied from drill cores. The most common Precambrian rock of Indiana is granite, a type of igneous rock. There are no known fossils from Precambrian rocks of Indiana.
