Paleontology and geology

During the Triassic, Pangea began to break apart, creating a series of rift basins in Virginia. Lakes that formed in these basins eventually filled with sediments, producing swampy environments. The inhabitants of these lakes and swamps, such as freshwater fish, insects, and amphibians, were preserved in these sediments. In fact, Virginia boasts the greatest diversity of Triassic insect fossils anywhere in North America!
