Paleontology and geology

There are no surface rocks of Devonian age in Nebraska; however, drill cores reveal that in the early Devonian, the state was above sea level. Sea level rose by the middle Devonian, and marine waters slowly covered all of Nebraska to form a shallow, warm sea suitable for reef animals and other marine organisms. Fossils are not available from the drill cores, but they would be similar to Devonian fossils from Missouri, and might included brachiopods, corals, bryozoans, and trilobites. By the end of the Devonian, the sea had receded, and erosion outpaced deposition.
