Very warm tropical seas covered Kentucky during the Silurian. Limy sediments that are now limestones, dolostones, and shales were deposited on the seafloor. Fossil faunas consist of diverse marine organisms such as brachiopods, bryozoans, crinoids, corals, trilobites and many others. A meteor or comet impact early in the Silurian may have formed the Jeptha Knob, an unusual structure towering 100 m above the general elevation in Shelby County.
