Paleontology and geology

Most of Kentucky was an upland area during the Permian as a result of the continued building of the Appalachians. Permian rocks have been found in a small area in western Kentucky, but they exist below the surface and can only be seen in drill cores. Marine fossils within these rocks indicate that these sediments were formed in a shallow sea.
