Paleontology and geology

Although not shown on this map, limited occurrences of approximately one-billion-year-old Precambrian rocks are known from Delaware. These metamorphosed continental crustal rocks, called the Baltimore Gneiss, preserve the history of a mountain-building event called the Grenville Orogeny. There are no fossils in these rocks.
