Paleontology and geology

The Tertiary was a time of extensive tectonic activity, including abundant mountain building and volcanism in the east central and extreme southwestern parts of the state, as well as in the Aleutian Islands. The Bering Land Bridge (Beringia) was exposed intermittently from the middle of the Tertiary through the Quaternary. The fossils of the Tertiary reflect both marine and terrestrial habitats and include the marine mammals, bivalves, snails, and land plants.
