What are Ginkgoes? Ginkgoes are a group of seed-bearing plants that exhibit little change throughout their fossil record. Only one species exists today, Ginkgo biloba, with its distinctive fan-shaped leaves. This hardy species can withstand pollution, attacks from insects and fungi, and can grow in a variety of tropical and temperate conditions. Ginkgoes were common plants during the Mesozoic. First known fossil occurrence: Permian. Last known fossil occurrence: Quaternary. This group has living relatives. |
