Paleontology and geologyWarm waters covered much of Saskatchewan through the Early and Middle Carboniferous. The sequence of sandstones, limestones, shales, and dolostones indicate gradual shallowing as the land emerged form the sea over the course of the period. Deposition began in deeper marine waters, then on reefs, in lagoons, and eventually beaches. These rocks are deeply buried beneath the surface, and contain oil and gas reservoirs. By the end of the period, the land emerged, and the seas covered only a small area in the southeast. |
