Paleontology and geologyThroughout the Cretaceous, Ontario was above sea level, and erosion continued to strip away rocks across the province. Sediments were deposited in rivers, lakes, and floodplains, but most of these deposits have either been buried beneath the surface or eroded away. One exposure can be found in central Ontario. It consists of sand, shale, conglomerate, and altered plant material. The combination of plant and pollen fossils and features like cross-bedding indicate that the sediments were deposited in migrating streams and wetlands. |
