Paleontology and geology
During the Cretaceous much of Oregon was still under water, and neither the Coast Range nor Cascades existed. Fragments of icthyosaurs and pterosaurs have been found in Cretaceous sediments deposited in the ancient sea covering the state. This map illustrates the fragmentary distribution of Cretaceous rocks.
