Paleontology and geology

There is a huge break in Iowa’s geologic history between the Cretaceous and Quaternary periods, as Iowa does not have a rock record of Tertiary time. However, a few Tertiary-age vertebrate remains have been found in modern stream sediments in southwestern Iowa.
