Paleontology and geology

Throughout the Quaternary, ice sheets expanded and contracted to the north of Arkansas. The state’s climate during the glaciations was much cooler and drier than it is today. Large mammals, such as giant ground sloths, mastodons, and mammoths, roamed the forests and grasslands that covered most of the state.
