Paleontology and geology

There are no Triassic rocks preserved at the surface in Arkansas; however, rocks from deep drill cores indicate that the state was completely above sea level during this time interval. These subsurface rocks are composed of sand and gravel deposited by rivers flowing from the eroding Ouachita Mountains of central Arkansas into rift valleys that formed as the supercontinent of Pangea broke apart.
