Paleontology and geology

After the Iapetus Ocean (sometimes called the Proto-Atlantic) rifted open in the Late Precambrian, shallow tropical seas covered Vermont. Tracks and trails of trilobites are plentiful in the muddy and sandy shoreline sediments deposited during this time. Exposures of Cambrian rocks stretch from north to south along the western part of the state.
