Paleontology and geology

During the Silurian, the seas rose, and the eastern portions of the state were flooded by marine waters. Silurian rocks formed from sediments eroded off the mountain chain to the west. Many of these rocks were metamorphosed during later tectonic activity, and few fossils are found in them.
