Paleontology and geology

A warm sea covered South Dakota during the Devonian. Although not shown on this map, these marine conditions are represented by a prominent limestone cliff around the Black Hills in the western part of the state. The limestone contains fossils of corals, brachiopods, microscopic conodonts, and other marine animals.
