Paleontology and geology

The Nebraskan glacial stage was named for the extensive Early Quaternary (Pleistocene) deposits of clays, sands, and gravels that blanket all of the state except the far eastern counties. Ancient soil horizons can also be found in the Pleistocene deposits, indicating times when the ice melted back and forests grew up. Fossils of mammoths, mastodons, camels, ferrets, birds, bison, horses, and other vertebrates have been found in Nebraska’s Quaternary deposits.
