Paleontology and geology

Shallow seas flooded over Montana from the west in four separate episodes during the Cambrian. When the seas covered the state, limestones and shales were deposited. When the seas retreated, sandy beach deposits accumulated. Trilobites represent the most abundantly fossilized animals of the time, and their remains are common in many Cambrian rocks from the state.
