Paleontology and geology

The Devonian Period began with a long period of erosion. Subsequently, sea level rose, and shallow to deep marine waters covered nearly all of the state. A diversity of marine life, including crinoids, sponges, brachiopods, molluscs, conodonts, and fish occupied these seas. Devonian deposits even include plant spores washed or blown in from nearby lands.
