Paleontology and geology

The Permian was a time of uplift and erosion at the end of the Alleghenian Orogeny, and most of the state was above sea level. Although this map shows no rocks of Permian age in Maryland, other maps indicate that some clastic sedimentary rocks in the far western panhandle of the state may be Permian.
