Paleontology and geology

The sea covered Louisiana during the Cretaceous. The Gulf of Mexico continued to grow as North and South America moved farther apart during the breakup of the supercontinent of Pangea. The only Cretaceous outcrops in the state are those of marine deposits that have been pushed up to the surface by salt domes that developed after the Cretaceous. Shark teeth have been found in some of these outcrops. Although difficult to see, this map indicates the presence of Cretaceous rocks in the north-central part of the state.
