Paleontology and geology

During the Tertiary, extensive tectonic activity and volcanism in Arizona provided a wide range of terrestrial habitats, including grasslands, lakes, river systems, and deserts. Three-toed horses, giant tortoises, mastodons, and camels thrived in the region. Deposits of Tertiary rocks occur throughout the state.
