Paleontology and geology

Most of Alaska as we know it today had not yet begun to assemble. A wide variety of marine conditions are recorded in the northern third of the state, with scattered evidence of marine environments elsewhere. Thus, the fossil record of the Permian is entirely marine and includes brachiopods, ammonoids, and snails.
