Paleontology and geologyDuring the Quaternary, West Virginia was south and east of the ice sheets of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Boreal forests covered much of the state at lower elevations, whereas a tundra environment typified the higher elevations. Animals that lived in West Virginia during this time included mastodons, mammoths, and ground sloths, but their fossils are known only from cave deposits. |
