Paleontology and geology

By the end of the Silurian, erosion of the mountains formed by the Taconic Orogeny in the Ordovician had ceased. Limy sediments were once again being deposited in a shallow sea that was home to numerous marine organisms, such as molluscs and echinoderms. Halysites and other corals formed large reef systems.
