Paleontology and geologyWith the retreat of the glaciers of the Early Quaternary (Pleistocene), the landscape was sculpted by erosion into what we see today. Texas was an ocean of grasses that supported a vast population of large mammals, such as bison, mammoths, and mastodons. This map indicates exposures of Quaternary rocks in the southwest and along the southeastern coast. |
