Paleontology and geology

Oregon and the rest of the North American continent lay in tropical regions during the Permian. Oregon itself consisted of a series of volcanic islands that were part of an island arc system. Massive limestones found in central Oregon provide evidence of coral reefs and lagoon environments. There are also many deep oceanic sediments and cherts likely to be of Permian age in the same area.
