Paleontology and geology

There are no surface exposures of the Jurassic in Michigan. However, red sandstones known from drill cores contain fossil plant spores that have been identified as Jurassic in age. These spores indicate a hot dry climate in Michigan during this time. This map shows the position of Jurassic sediments that lie hidden beneath the surficial glacial deposits in central Michigan.
