Paleontology and geology

There is only one small region of northern Illinois where Cambrian rocks are exposed at the surface, but these are not fossiliferous. Subsurface Cambrian rocks contain fossils such as trilobites, brachiopods, and algal borings that indicate Illinois was covered by shallow sea at this time.
