What are "Progymnosperms"? The “progymnosperms” have been grouped together because their fossils look similar, but their relationships to each other and to other plants are still unclear. Although these tree- and shrub-like plants produced “wood” and generally looked like gymnosperms, they did not produce seeds, and therefore are not considered true gymnosperms. Like ferns, progymnosperms reproduced by releasing spores into the environment, but lacked other characteristics of ferns.

First known fossil occurrence: Devonian.

Last known fossil occurrence: Carboniferous.
