Other Gymnosperms

What are Other Gymnosperms? There are some seed-bearing plants whose relationships to other gymnosperms remain unclear, partly because very little is known about them. The fossils in this group have narrow geographic and stratigraphic ranges, and few specimens have been collected and studied. They differ from each other as well as Ginkgoes, Gnetophytes, “Seed Ferns,” Cycads, Conifers, and their relatives in various developmental, anatomical, and reproductive characteristics. Members of this group have different originations and extinctions, but all together, their fossil record extends from the Permian to the Cretaceous.

First known fossil occurrence: Permian.

Last known fossil occurrence: Cretaceous.
